Module #1
What is Postmodernism?
Now I understand Tumblr a little more. Postmodernism in reference to art-making, in my opinion, is the decision to take all the rules of past eras and break them. Take all the conventions and traditions and throw them out the window, unless of course, you want to keep them and incorporate them how you want, then that is what you do.
Society is tending toward this “do what feels good” and “if it makes you happy, do it” mentality, what shouldn’t that apply to the art world?
People don’t want to be confined to rules of convention, they don’t want to edit or fact check. They want to do what feels good and makes them happy including on canvas or with a camera or on paper.
I’m not sure what I think about it. I am torn. I believe in rules and traditions, but I also abhor “art-speak” and being told things must be done a certain way because that is how it’s always been done. Funny, because I am a believer and certainly adhere to the rules of the Bible.
I agree that there is nothing new on this earth, that new ideas stem from the past - I say that I have been accumulating ideas for the past 44 years. But I don’t agree that there can’t be original works of art - that just seems lazy. I want to be original and strive to do something that is new. I am certainly influenced by what I see, but that becomes a confluence of ideas - a mishmash and hopefully a lovely one that stirs something new in people.
Postmodernism, like fake news, I think it will come back around that people do want some convention as Mr. Barrett stated about narratives in postmodern art. It is coming back only with the postmodern spin on it.
